Jeffrey Ulrich
B.A., Rutgers University, 2008
Jeff Ulrich received his B.A. in Classics and Math from Rutgers University in 2008 and entered Penn's PhD program in 2010. Jeff is currently exploring two distinct classical interests. The first is a project comparing ancient theories of cultural normative behavior, specifically as displayed in Herodotus' Histories and in the works of other early Greek ethnographers, with recent philosophical and anthropological discourses, such as Martin Buber's I and Thou. Second, Jeff plans to inquire into the Platonic and/or Neo-Platonic heritage of Saint Augustine. He hopes to decipher some of Augustine's potential translational misunderstandings of the Platonic dialogues as his readings of them were mediated by the translations of Plotinus. Some of Jeff's other interests include Greek mathematics and Greek historiography.
