Translation is inherently comparative. As the current translator of Ovid's Tristia and the Principal Investigator of the multi-year project that aims at translating all of Ovid's works into Mandarin with commentaries, I discuss in what ways cross-cultural comparative scopes and methods permeate the transformation of Ovid's poetry into modern Chinese, raise difficult questions for the translators, and often open up new territories for further scholarly exploration.
