COLLOQUIUM: Tim Whitmarsh, Cambridge, "Atheism in the Ancient World: One Year On"

Thursday, April 6, 2017 - 4:30pm to 6:00pm

402 Cohen Hall

In Battling the Gods: Atheism in the Ancient World, Prof. Whitmarsh argued that there were a range of positions available in pre-Christian antiquity that corresponded approximately to what we would call ‘atheism’. In this paper he explores the methodological difficulties raised by the study of ancient atheism, and reflects upon the status of ‘belief’ and ‘disbelief' as categories of analysis for non-Christian religions.
