Department of Classical StudiesAlumnus Sam Beckelhymer has been awarded the SCS/NEH Fellowship at the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae Institute in the Bavarian Academy of Arts and Sciences in Munich, Germany for 2015–2016.
In addition to a permanent staff of roughly twenty classicists (principally from Germany), the TLL Institute also houses fellows and regular visitors from throughout the world. Since 1984, the Society for Classical Studies has selected thirty TLL Fellows to represent the United States in working on the project. The Fellowship is made possible by a generous grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. During his term as Fellow, Sam will have the opportunity to research and publish articles for the TLL, to broaden his or her vision of the ancient world, and to collaborate with senior scholars in the field of Latin lexicography. Sam holds a BA from the University of Washington. He began graduate studies at Penn in 2008 and earned his PhD in 2014. His dissertation, "The Way that our Catullus Walked: Grammar and Poetry in the Late Republic," considers the growing importannce of the professional grammaticus and of his craft, the ars grammatica, in the mid-first century BC as they are reflected in the poetry of Catullus. Since completing his graduate work, Sam has held a position as Associate Lecturer in Department of Classics and Ancient History at the University of Exeter. He will begin his term at the TLL on August 1, 2015.
