“The Usage of Antiquity in Modern Times: The Manipulation of the Past”

Recent claims by the alt-right to represent the values of Greek and Roman antiquity (along with other antiquities) have taken many by surprise, and caused some indignation. But partisan and self-interested interpretations of this "heritage" have been a part of American political discourse from the beginning. This talk will focus on a few examples from different sides of the political spectrum in order to provoke discussion of what role those of us who study antiquity should play in this debate.
