Title:  "Papyri without the Past: new approaches to cartonnage fragments"

Abstract: This talk will explore a number of novel methodological frames through which to approach papyrological texts "recovered" from mummy cartonnage. These approaches seek to take account of the colonial contexts in which cartonnage papyri were collected and initially edited as a contribution towards building a decolonizing discourse within the field of classics. Of particular focus will be the objects now known as P. Tebt 692 (now thought to be from Sophocles' Inachus) and P. Mil Volg. VIII 309 (a collection of epigrams generally attributed to Posidippus).
