First Friday Meeting -- The so-called Dorian Invasions

Friday, October 1, 2021 - 2:45pm to 4:15pm

337 Cohen Hall

Please join us for our next First Friday meeting on October 1st, 2:45 - 4:15 pm (note the new time slot), in Cohen 337. The topic is the so-called Dorian Invasions; the session will be led by Odysseas Espanol Androutsopoulos, Jeremy McInerney, and Helen Wong.

The Dorian Invasions provide a revealing example of how the assembling of an historical argument can take on deeply racist implications. Proceeding from discussions of myth and the distribution of dialects, all areas that seem to be relatively free of ideological weight, historians in the middle of the 19th century fashioned a profoundly racist reconstruction of early Greek history. In this session we will look at the building blocks of the thesis of the Dorian Invasions, and try to identify how, where, when and why biological models of ethnicity were appropriated to reconstruct early Greece.

All are welcome to attend. We hope to see you there!
