Nathaniel Fleury Solley

My main focus is Latin poetry, especially the poets of the Republic and Augustan period. My dissertation, “Horatian Ecopoetics,” examines Horace’s poetic representation of the position of the human in relation to the nonhuman. The project developed from a longstanding interest in Geography, specifically the intersection of ecology and cultural landscape studies. I have developed additional research interests in Pliny the Elder, Lucretius, and ancient astronomical texts.

Originally from Berkeley, California, I first learned Latin at Berkeley High School before receiving my B.A. from U.C. Berkeley in Geography and Classical Languages in 2017. I taught Latin in Oakland for a year before coming to Penn in 2018. In my spare time I enjoy playing racquet sports, guitar, and chess.
