First Friday Meeting -- Session on Classical Studies’ traditional and increasingly contested identification with “The West” or “Western Civilization.”

Friday, November 5, 2021 - 2:45pm to 4:15pm

337 Cohen Hall

The First Friday session on November 5th (2:45 - 4:15 pm, Cohen 337) will be introduced by Hanzhao (Roo) Kuang, Bridget Murnaghan, and Theodora Naqvi and will focus on Classical Studies’ traditional and increasingly contested identification with “The West” or “Western Civilization.”  We will touch on the roots of this identification in classical antiquity, its dissemination and persistence in various forms of popular literature, and some of the alternative ways of conceptualizing the field that are now being proposed.

For those of you who have time for some advance reading, we recommend this brief article by Kwame Anthony Appiah: There Is No Such Thing as Western Civilisation.

All are welcome to attend. We hope to see you there!
