Title: "Aeschylus' Paintings"

Abstract: This paper explores how the dynamics of visual representation— in particular of painting and gesture— together with poetic language create the full force of the tragic in the staging and performance of the story of two young women in Aeschylus’ Agamemnon. An explication of a key passage will lead to broader questions about the connection between poetic and artistic traditions as well as how such a reading has implications for the way we approach Aeschylus’ stagecraft and both ancient and modern criticism of the verbal arts more generally.
