Alden Smith's main research interest is Latin poetry. His books and edited volumes include Virgil in the Blackwell Introductions series (2011), an edition and translation from the Italian of The Great Archimedes by Mario Geymonat, (2010), The Primacy of Vision in Virgil's Aeneid (2005), and Poetic Allusion and Poetic Embrace in Ovid and Virgil (1997), which is based on his Penn dissertation.
